How to Use the LEN and TRIM Functions in Excel (Clean & Count Text Properly)

The LEN and TRIM functions are very helpful when working with messy text data in Excel. Use them to count characters and remove unnecessary spaces.

🔸 1. LEN Function

=LEN(text)

Example: =LEN(" Excel ") → 7

LEN counts every character including spaces.

🔸 2. TRIM Function

=TRIM(text)

Example: =TRIM(" Excel ") → "Excel"

TRIM removes extra spaces from the beginning, end, and between words (leaves single space).

✅ Why Use These?

  • Ensure clean data before using formulas like VLOOKUP
  • Compare two cells accurately by removing hidden spaces
  • Count characters correctly without space-related errors

🔗 Combine Them:

=LEN(TRIM(A1))

This gives the actual character count after cleaning the text in A1.
